Foam is a dispersion of
gas bubbles in a liquid,
which is formed by the
presence of surfactants in
the medium. In our everyday
life we are accustomed to
using products that foam
up, such as shampoos or
detergents, among others.
Industrially, however,
foaming is not always
desirable, as it can cause
a decrease in production
yield and obtaining poor-
quality finished products.
In the decorative paint industry, excess foam may cause an increase in production time, cause problems during the packing and cause deficiencies in the final appearance of the coating.
Thus, it is essential to use an anti-foaming agent that allows optimal control of foam formation during production stages and keeps its properties during storage. Thus, paint with a smooth finish and free of craters and fisheyes can be obtained.
Choosing the appropriate defoamer for each formulation is imperative to ensure the quality of the paint. For this reason, it is necessary to study in detail the behaviour of such additives by means of tests that allow us to predict their defoaming effectiveness, persistence and potential incompatibilities.

In campo industriale, tuttavia, la formazione di schiuma non è sempre desiderabile, in quanto può provocare una diminuzione della resa produttiva e l'otteni-
mento di prodotti finiti di scarsa qualità.
Nel settore delle pitture a uso decorativo, una quantità di schiuma in eccesso può causare un aumento del tempo di produzione, problemi durante il confezionamento e ca- renze di aspetto finale del rivestimento. Pertanto, è indi- spensabile utilizzare un agente antischiuma che permetta un ottimale controllo della formazione di schiuma durante le fasi di produzione e mantenere le sue proprietà durante lo stoccaggio in questo modo è possibile ottenere una finitura liscia e priva di crateri.
La scelta dell'antischiuma appropriato per ciascuna for- mulazione è indispensabile per garantire la qualità della vernice. Per questo motivo è necessario studiare in det- taglio il comportamento di tali additivi con prove che ci permettano di prevedere la loro efficacia antischiuma, la persistenza e potenziali incompatibilità.
